Four New Friends... Plus One!!

Shane then agreed,

“We have to get a new fish!”

It was time for bed, we reassured Lucas,

“We will get a fishy friend tomorrow after school.”

The next day couldn't go by fast enough, 

Lucas was so eager to get a new fish 

And of course Lily is happy to go get another too.

Now..

This part of the story is not mine. 


I stayed back, to get work done.

Shane, Lily and Lucas took a trip to petsmart without me.

Let’s start with a side note. They were supposed to just get one.


So here’s their story.


They were looking for Tetra’s and Lily decided these clear ones were the cutest.

Now there was only 4 in the tank,

Lily and Lucas didn't want to leave anyone behind. 

Shane turns to the worker and asks,

“We have a 20 gallon tank. How many of these should we get?”

He explained how much fish we had in it.

The worker replied,

“All of them if you want!”

There were “buy 3, get one free” she informed him

So apparently they thought it was a good idea to get them all.

And they headed back home.

The kids were so excited in the car that they got 4 new little babies.


Now i can tell my story 


They walk into the house, so excited to show me.

Lily holds the bag up,

To show me the fish in the bag.

I could feel my face drop, when I saw what's in the bag.

I looked at Shane,

“You were supposed to get one!”

The kids had such a happy grin on their face.

He replied all cheery 

“What?”

“We didn't want to leave anyone behind.”

“There were only 4 in the tank.”

“And they were, buy 3 get one free.”

And here comes when he tells me he did research about tetra fish.

“I read, tetra do well in schools, they are schooling fish.”

“It’s best to have them in a school of 7 or more, so now we have 8 tetra.”

He was so happy to inform me.

I just shook my head and said,

“Well.. Cant take them back now” I said outloud 

Here we go again..

Plop the bag in the tank. 

Wait 30 minutes.

Fight the knot.

Try not to squish the fish.

Some very close supervision from Lily.

And finally..

The fish were in.


Wait.. I’m back

I went to publish this..

But then Shane walked by, and said 

“You're missing the frog too.”
 I looked at him and said,

“Wait!”

“You got the frog that day too?”

“Yep” he replied

So..

They got 4 tetra and a frog..

Yep.. that happened!!

I forgot!

The day after the great escape!! I popped out of bed, I immediately thought to check the fish. I looked in and counted them all. Thankfully, they were all together in one spot. I remember thinking, “Thank god, that the pink fish has not passed away.” I sat there for a while and watched. I started to realize,  They were acting strange!  “Is this how fish swim?” I thought I started taking out my phone and recording. They were swimming in place,  Leaning to the side,  Then leaning to the other side.  I noticed, it's Pink Fish and Yellow Fish doing it. I didn't even realize at the time. But..   How it all started!! We love being fish keepers now but…  We never planned on becoming fish keepers. It all started on a family getaway to Vermont. The hotel we stayed at had a beautiful indoor pond that wrapped along the dining room. Every morning before breakfast, my youngest, Lucas, hurried over to the pond to visit them. What started as a curiosity soon became Lucas' love for these giant fish; nothing you would see in any home fishbowl.  By the second day something funny happened, the fish would swim over to him. Maybe thinking, "Does he have food?" Maybe just curious about this interesting giant. Whatever the reason, every morning they would school around him while he happily talked to them.  They had these big lips that would move like they were actually forming sentences.   The first trip to the petstore  We walked into Petsmart for the first time full of excitement, expecting to spend maybe $20, a fish or two and a bowl.  We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. The kids and I beelined to the fish section. We saw orange fish, white fish, tiny fish, big fish. We had no idea where to even start, nor did we know they need a current about of water. Lucas starts pointing from tank to tank, I then looked over to the employee and asked  "Can we get one of these fish and one of those." She patiently stated, “They can’t go together” “They need a 30 gallon tank” Then worker asking, “Do you have a tank?” Meanwhile Shane is shopping for tanks and learning about what we actually need.
