Only seconds had passed.

Shane had called Lucas over to comfort him, so I could scoop the fish up in the net and do what the fish owners do..

Flush them down the toilet.

Lily was right next to me,

I picked the net back up out of the tank.

“Those poor other fish in the tank,” I thought.

I can just imagine..

They must be thinking

“Watch out! Giant net incoming!”

Or..

“Watch out! The Giant’s back!”

I scooped the fish up.

Lily then yells,

"Be careful with him!”

I look at her and say

“Relax, it's dead!”
“You can still be gentle." she exclaimed

She then follows with a question.

“What are you going to do with him?”

“Umm.. flush it!” I didn't take into consideration that we never had to deal with a dead fish. We weren't prepared for this.

“Oh..."

she responds with a soft saddened voice and her face expression lowered.

I looked at her with soft eyes and said,

“It's okay. That's where fish go!”

I then proceeded up the stairs,

When Lucas saw me start up the stairs, with the net in my hand.

He got out of Shane's arms and chased me up the stairs.

I plopped the fish in the toilet before he could stop me!

Lucas yelled

“No!”

“Stop!”

“Get him out!”

“I tried to reassure him

"It's okay, that's what we do with fish when they die!”

But.. he wasn’t having any of it!
He continued to insist,

“Put him back in the water!”

I tried to tell him,

“I can’t! It's not good for the other fish.

I tried to point out to him,

“Look he’s not moving, his body is not working anymore!”

“Do you see?”

He yelled again.

“Get him out!”

I could not flush him with him this upset.

So I carefully scooped the fish back out with the net.

I showed Lucas I had him back in the net.

I walked down stairs.

Put the net with the fish in it, on top of the tank cover.

He yelled,

“Don’t leave him there, put him in the water!”

I insisted I could not put him back in the tank.

He replied

“I’ll get a bowl!"

"We will put him in there!”

This was so saddening, I really didn't know what to do, we could not keep a dead fish!

I insisted,

"she is safe right there."

I asked him,

“Do you need to snuggle and talk?”

He responded,

“Yes”

So we went and sat on the couch, took a minute to breathe and calm down before we could talk.
