The moment we were dreading
I then went about my day again, I had things to do before I picked up Lily and Lucas.
I did some laundry and crocheted, before I knew it, it was time to pick up the kids.
They got in the car and I couldn’t wait because this was still weighing heavily on me.
I whispered to Lily in the car,
“I can’t find one of the pink fish.”
Her eyes got wide
Her mouth dropped,
Nothing came out at first!
She finally said
“How?”
I told her,
“She has to be dead somewhere in the tank.”
“NO!” she replied
I informed her
“When dad gets home we have to move the decorations to find her!”
“Okay.. can I get Dunkin before we search?” Lily replied
This is such a Lily thing to say,
Looking back, I think she knew we were about to discover something none of us were ready to see, so comfort food beforehand made plenty of sense to her.
If your thinking,
“I hope she got her Dunkin!”
She in fact did get Dunkin.
Before long, Shane got home. We all went to inspect the tank.
We start counting the fish,
One pink fish,
Two blue fish,
There is yellow fish still by the filter,
But..
Still missing a pink fish.
We all started thinking outloud.,
“We are going to have to move the decorations!”
We talked about how to do it, putting my hand in the tank was an option but I knew that option was for sure not going to happen.
I sat and thought,
Then a thought popped into my head.
I announce,
"I can use the net to lift the decorations."
Shane sits on the couch then Lily and I hover over the tank.
I grab the net,
Take the cover off the tank,
Slowly the net gets lowered into the tank. I first move the Krusty Krab.
We look, and look again cautiously
But..
No Pink Fish. Next the white cave.
I take the net, dump it upside down. Again we look but..
No Pink Fish
We both look at each other and think outloud
“Where did she go?”
With the net still in the tank, I accidentally nudged the pink plant.
Lily suddenly yelled,
“There she is!”
I look,
I scream,
Then lily screams because i scream
Not knowing Lucas was behind us watching.
He screams that follows with a loud cry.
“Shit” I yelled
Dropped the net in the tank, turned around and grabbed Lucas.
“It’s okay” I told him as he cried into me.
Through his tears he asks,
“Is my fishy friend okay?”
My heart sank.
“I think a fishy might have died” I softly told him
“Not all fishIes can live.”
“Sometimes fishies die.”
